Let’s Talk About Fakeaways – Featured on 9 News

I’m so excited to share something really fun with you all – I recently featured on 9 News Queensland to talk about one of my favourite topics: fakeaways! With the cost of living hitting everyone hard, making takeaway-style meals at home has become a game-changer for families looking to save money (while still enjoying those cheeky treats).

I shared some easy recipes with the 9 News team, showing how to recreate your favourite fast-food dishes at home, including alternatives to KFC’s fried chicken, McDonald’s Big Mac, and GYG burrito bowls. If you’re looking to cut down on takeaway spending but don’t want to miss out on the fun, this one’s for you!

My Famous JFC (Jan Fried Chicken)

Now, I couldn’t talk about fakeaways without sharing my JFC (Jan Fried Chicken) recipe! It’s a super easy and tasty alternative to KFC, and you can even customise the flavours to suit your family’s taste.

JFC Chicken - Alternative to KFC

Here’s how I do it:

  • Marinate the chicken: I cut the chicken into burger-sized pieces (or popcorn chicken for the little ones). Then I marinate it in Olympus Greek Yoghurt for about 20 minutes – trust me, this is where the magic starts!

  • Mix up the spices: I love to play around with spices, but here’s my go-to mix:
    • Paprika
    • Garlic powder
    • Onion powder
    • Cumin
    • Salt & pepper
    • Cinnamon
    • Coriander powder
    • Turmeric
    • Onion flakes
    • Ground clove
    • Ground cardamom

  • Shake & Fry: I throw the chicken into a flour and spice mix, give it a good shake in a bag, and let it chill in the fridge for 20 minutes to help the batter stick. After that, I either air fry or deep fry – both ways are delicious!

Serve your JFC with steamed rice or pop it in a burger with some Japanese mayonnaise. If you’re feeling fancy, drizzle a bit of Kecap Manis and top with shallots for extra flavour. Yum!
